Hepatica Smiles

“Be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe

no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

_ Max Ehrmann

  1. Melissa, the painting is so serene. I was not familiar with that quote, but I think it is so very perfectly lovely. I totally get that keeping up that kind of lifestyle must be exhausting and I say thanks but no thanks. Not for a skinny minute do I wish to live that perfect life. I think you have wisely chosen the right path of balance for yourself, although I’m sure it isn’t always easy. You have a beautiful soul and gift of artistic talent, hold on to that. xo Kim

  2. The poem made me recall Carl Sagan talking about us being made of stardust. We are literally children of the universe.

    β€œThe nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
    ― Carl Sagan, Cosmos

    I really like your painting.

  3. This is lovely, Melissa. The colors all complement each other in a pleasing way and your little hepaticas are very sweet.
    I always enjoy the quotes other bloggers share and especially so this one. Thanks. πŸ™‚

    1. Speaking of quotes, I’m glad to see you attributing this one to Max Ehrmann. Many people incorrectly attribute “Desiderata” to Anonymous.

      And of course you’ve got a pretty pastel painting there. Your identification of the flowers as hepaticas reminds me of the old Sal Hepatica:

  4. Your smiling hepaticas are so pretty and cheerful – and they go well with the verse from “Desiderata,” which is one of my favorite meditations. When flowers return each summer, and artists like you are inspired to paint them, it is easier to believe that the universe is unfolding as it should.

  5. Oh, thank you Barbara πŸ™‚ I’ve always liked how you match an image with a quote. When I came across this one just as I was thinking of what to write in my post, it seemed to leap off the page.
